Ordinal Numbers in English
Los números ordinales en inglés son adjetivos, y tienen género (femenino o masculino). Sirven para darles un orden de secuencia o una posición a un conjunto de elementos (cosas, las personas o acontecimientos, sucesos). También para narrar o listar en tiempo (fechas, festivales, eventos, etc) y espacio (pisos de un edificio - primero, segundo, etc) . Ejemplos:
- January first is my birthday (el primero de enero es mi cumpleaños)
- First hand (de primera mano)
- Carlos arrived in the first place (Carlos llegó en el primer lugar)
- Third-class (de tercera clase)
- First, I did go but... (en primer lugar, yo fui, pero...)
- I live on the first floor (yo vivo en el primer piso)
- eighth heaven (el octavo cielo)
¿Cómo se forma el número ordinal?
Se forma de la siguiente manera: Si deseas escribir el ordinal en letra, es así: first, pero si quieres escribir en número ordinal abreviado es así: 1st.
- Para comprender el cuadro, se entiende que del primero al tercero, el número cambia totalmente, pero a partir del cuarto hasta el vigésimo, al número sólo se le agrega th al final.
- En el quinto y el duodécimo, cambia la ve por fth - five por fifth; y twelve por twelfth.
- En el vigésimo primero, el twenty se escribe igual que el cardinal; lo mismo con el trigésimo primero, cuadragésimo primero, etc.
- En el centésimo, el número es igual, solo agregamos th, y también puedes agregar one delante del hundredth; para el centésimo primero le quitamos th al centésimo y también le agregamos and. Ejemplo: hundred and first. Lo mismo sucede con dos centésimas primero -two hundred and first, three hundred and first, etc.
- Del 1000th en adelante, se le agrega el cardinal dos, tres, etc al término milésimo. Ejemplo: 2000 (dosmilésimo), 3000 (tresmilésimo), etc
- Del 1000th en adelante, se le agrega el cardinal dos, tres, etc al término milésimo. Ejemplo: 2000 (dosmilésimo), 3000 (tresmilésimo), etc
- El milésimo, cienmilésimo y millonésimo es igual que el cardinal, sólo le agregamos th a la letra en inglés. Ejemplo: one thousandth, etc.
